The simulation exercise was conducted in collaboration with Maschinenringe Deutschland GmbH and E.VITA GmbH. Students from the Sustainability and Environmental Management program as well as the Energy Systems and Renewable Energy program took on various roles within the energy market and made strategic decisions across the entire value chain—from energy generation through trading and distribution to the political and economic conditions that significantly influence the energy transition.
A key aspect of the simulation was the direct impact of each decision on the financial metrics of the simulated companies. This highlighted how closely sustainable action, political mandates, and economic success are intertwined. The practical nature of the simulation provided participants with valuable insights into the complex interrelationships within the energy sector.
The EnergyNext energy simulation game was once again expertly facilitated by Matthias Heilemann and Steffen Ziegler. Professor Uwe Holzhammer from the Faculty of Sustainable Infrastructure provided academic supervision for the simulation. This team supported the students in connecting theoretical concepts with real-world challenges and interpreting the results of the simulation.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Maschinenringe Deutschland GmbH and E.VITA GmbH for their collaborative partnership and support in conducting the business simulation. This joint effort between the business community and the university made it possible to offer students an innovative and practice-oriented learning format.
The business simulation provided an excellent opportunity to link theoretical knowledge with practical experience and to examine current challenges in the energy sector from various perspectives. At the same time, the event fostered interdisciplinary exchange and helped students develop key skills for shaping a sustainable energy future.
