Biomedical Sciences & Management (M. Sc.)

Application period for the winter semester 2027/28: 2 May to 15 July 2027

The Biomedical Sciences & Management (M. Sc.) program offers tomorrow's leaders a unique opportunity to study for the highly dynamic high-tech life sciences industry. This interdisciplinary master's program is uniquely positioned thanks to its industry-specific and application-oriented focus.

The Biomedical Sciences & Management program specifically prepares graduates of economics, natural sciences, medical sciences, and related bachelor's programs for specialist and management roles in biotechnology, biomedical engineering, and the pharmaceutical industry. Taking into account the latest scientific findings and application-oriented expertise, the program qualifies graduates for interface functions in the life sciences - particularly in the areas of project and portfolio management, strategic planning, business development, R&D management, clinical operations management, CMC management, regulatory affairs, and quality management.

We impart both strategic and operational knowledge covering the entire value chain, from research to regulatory approval and innovation. In addition, the program offers specialization options in areas such as clinical drug development, drug production, and innovative medical devices.

The study concept and schedule enable practice-oriented training, e.g., through dual studies or professional internships. This allows students to gain in-depth insight into possible fields of work and to gain initial professional experience parallel to their master's studies. This supports our overarching goal of providing our graduates with practical qualifications and facilitating their entry into the professional world of biotechnology and the pharmaceutical industry.

Our graduates therefore benefit from practical, interdisciplinary, and internationally oriented training. The courses in the program are mainly taught in German and partly in English.

Contents

The Biomedical Sciences & Management program comprises three part-time semesters. The fourth semester is reserved for the master's thesis.

In terms of content, the program is broadly divided into the subject areas of research and development, manufacturing, quality management, and sales, as well as approval and market access. This overview of the value chain is supplemented by the strategic aspects of innovation, transformation, and portfolio management. Many of the modules are accompanied by projects and partners from the field. The individual modules can be found in the graphic.

Testimonials

Jannik Jurkic, Student

“During my first practical experience in the pharmaceutical industry, I realized how crucial the combination of technical knowledge and methodological skills in a specific application context is for starting a career. The Master's program in Biomedical Sciences & Management specifically prepares me to develop these key skills in a targeted manner and thus ideally prepares me for my entry into professional life.”

Patricia Behnke, Student

“For me, the program offers the ideal combination of natural sciences and economics, as well as sound scientific teaching and practice-oriented training. I also find the opportunity to complete a dual degree in collaboration with a company particularly appealing.”

Dominik Hartl, Chief Medical Officer Granite Bio AG, Basel, Switzerland

“The program provides academic depth and methodological excellence while maintaining a strong focus on the practical applications of the life sciences industry - a rare and valuable combination.”

Prof. Dr. Markus Hinder, VP Global Head of Safety Science, Novartis, Basel, Switzerland

"An understanding of innovation and its application, scientific thinking, and business acumen are uniquely combined here.”

Dr. Claudia Roth, VP Education, Vetter Pharma, Ravensburg, Germany

“Biomedical Sciences & Management is a forward-looking degree program that specifically prepares talented students to meet the challenges of innovation, regulation, and value creation in the global life sciences industry.”

Quick Info

Admission and application

The following qualifications must be proven for the Master's degree programme in Biomedical Sciences & Management (BSM):

  • The successful completion of a business degree programme at a German university with at least 210 ECTS credit points or an equivalent domestic or foreign degree. Proof is provided by submitting the degree certificate. The examination board decides on equivalence.
  • Proof of sufficient proficiency in English at level B2.  In the General statutes section of the Law Office you will find the document "Recognized English Tests B2" where all tests recognized as equivalent are listed; this is not required if the university entrance qualification or first degree was acquired in English or the applicant can show that English is their mother tongue.
  • Please note: Your admission will only be checked after you have submitted your complete application documents. No binding statement can be made without the submission of certificates. It is not possible to provide advance information by e-mail or telephone about your chances of admission.

Here you will find information on the application procedure.

The following link contains information for applicants from abroad on the application procedure.

    or
  • proof of practical or theoretical study and examination achievements in addition to the first degree at a domestic or foreign university, which correspond in terms of content and scope to the requirements of a Bachelor's degree programme in business administration, engineering or information technology.

Note: Please note that it must be clearly recognisable from the documents providing proof of practical work experience or practical or theoretical achievements in addition to the first degree amounting to 30 ECTS that these are 30 ECTS acquired in addition to the Bachelor's degree. Proof can be provided in the form of a certificate from the university stating that the ECTS / internship was not recognised in the first degree programme. The duration of the work placement outside of the degree programme or practical work completed in addition to the first degree should be at least 20 weeks full-time. In addition, the internship certificate must be submitted in officially certified form together with the other application documents. In both cases, we recommend that applicants submit documents that are as informative as possible and from which the examination board can immediately and clearly understand the content aspects.

FAQs

How is the program structured?

Courses are held during the lecture periods in the winter and summer semesters. Approximately 20 in-person days are scheduled for each of the first and second semesters, and approximately 25 in-person days for the third semester. Between these in-person days, supplementary online instruction is provided on a weekly basis. The online sessions are generally offered outside of standard core working hours. This allows students to pursue a career—for example, as a working student or as part of a trainee program—while studying, and at the same time benefit from a high-quality academic education. If you have any further questions about the organization of the program, the program directors will be happy to assist you.

Can I only enroll in this program if I have a corporate partner?

No. The program can be completed with or without a corporate partner. The program is designed so that the master’s degree is completed over four semesters. This gives students greater flexibility in terms of time and allows them to tailor their studies to their individual life circumstances. Many students use the extra time to gain practical experience while studying, for example through a part-time student job, a trainee program, or internships. Others appreciate the opportunity to better balance their studies with family obligations. In addition, the program structure allows for time to pursue other personal, social, or professional activities. The program is therefore aimed at both students with corporate partners and those who wish to structure their studies independently of such partnerships.

How and when can I apply?

Here you'll find more information relating to application.

What documents do I have to submit with my application?

A full list of documents is provided in the application tool. Here you will also find detailed requirements in terms of the form in which the documents have to be submitted. All documents initially have to be uploaded online. In the event of admission to the master's degree course, certain documents then have to be submitted as an original or as a certified copy.

Can I submit the bachelor’s degree certificate at a later stage?

The bachelor’s degree certificate can be submitted later provided evidence is submitted before the regular application deadline that the applicant will complete their first degree course at the end of the current semester with 210 ECTS points. This is done by uploading a recent transcript of records and proof of the final ECTS credits earned upon graduation (for example, excerpt study and examination regulation). Whatever happens, the final certificate or confirmation of successful completion of the first degree must be submitted no later than at matriculation.

Is my self-generated online grade sheet sufficient as an officially certified current grade confirmation?

Many universities offer the option of generating transcripts online.
Transcripts generated online will only be accepted if they include a verification code and web address for validation or if they bear the original seal and signature of your university.

Simply printing out a transcript generated online is not sufficient. The exception to this rule is the THI transcript from the student portal.

Is it possible to complete the program as a part-time student?

The program is organized as a block-based part-time course of study. This means that it is possible to complete it while working full-time. However, it is important to consider the overall workload involved: all master's courses require preparation and follow-up work. In addition, there are several project assignments to complete during the semester. When combined with full-time employment, this leaves little time for other private activities.
