THI is one of the leading universities of applied sciences in Germany in terms of research. With an annual research budget of 33 million euros – accounting for just under 40 per cent of the university’s total budget – THI occupies a leading position in this field. In its latest Funding Atlas, the DFG ranks THI first among all 116 universities of applied sciences surveyed for EU funding programmes and fourth for federal funding programmes.

1. Research Focus Area: Vehicle Safety and Innovative Mobility

THI is renowned both nationally and internationally for its wide range of applied research expertise in the fields of mobility, vehicle safety and road safety. As a university specialising in mobility, THI places a strong research focus area on the automotive and aviation sectors. Five institutes bring together the research topics in this key area:

2. Research Focus Area: Artificial Intelligence

The research focus area on Artificial Intelligence forms a central pillar of research activities at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt. The THI possesses proven expertise in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, particularly in the application areas of mobility and production. The aim of AI research is to make the high complexity of autonomous mobility systems manageable, and to further develop and optimise production, logistics and quality assurance processes on a data-driven basis – with a view to efficiency, resilience and climate neutrality.

3. Research Focus Area: Renewable Energy and Sustainability

THI’s research focus areas on Renewable Energies and Sustainability are dedicated to ensuring a secure and efficient energy supply and to establishing viable sustainability structures against the backdrop of climate change and resource scarcity. To this end, THI has two institutes and a research and transfer centre at its disposal. A key strategic objective within the ‘Renewable Energies and Sustainability’ research focus area is the systematic expansion of applied sustainability research, which is being driven forward in particular at the Neuburg campus.
